Yesterday afternoon I finally had the opportunity to see Shakespeare's "Pericles" live onstage for the first time. I was not disappointed! Once again I have fallen in love with a rarely produced Shakespeare play. I felt like a kid at Christmas. An episodic adventure story with a narrator? Who knew?! Kathleen Conlin's production of this epic masterpiece was nothing short of brilliant! Her director's notes talked about the fact that this play is very popular with modern audiences because of its simplistic/episodic form. Ms. Conlin took this concept and I absolutely loved it. The story itself was set in Shakespeare's time but Gower, the narrator (chorus) was in Indiana Jones type dress and controlled the entire story with modern electronic equipment. This really brought a modern day sensibility through which to pull the audience into the story.
The cast was incredible as well! What absolute impeccable ensemble work! Kudos to the entire cast, crew and director for a job well done! Thank you for introducing me to another Shakespeare classic!
Again, only one more week left! Get down here if you can to see this rarely produced gem!
